What vegan leather is made of

Short answer

Vegan leather is a marketing term, not a material. It covers at least nine things with nothing in common except the absence of hide: polyurethane film, PVC, pineapple leaf fiber, cactus, cork, apple waste, and cultivated fungus. Most of what sells under the name is polyurethane on a fabric backing.

Two names that still contain hide

  • Bicast leather — a polyurethane film laid over real split hide. The surface is synthetic and the material underneath is an animal.
  • Bonded leather — leather scraps and dust bound together with polyurethane, then embossed. Typically sold on furniture and book covers.

Both sit next to genuine synthetics on a shelf and both read as plastic to a shopper. If a product says bicast or bonded, it is leather.

Polymer coatings

A plastic layer bonded to a fabric backing. The established options, and the overwhelming majority of what is sold as vegan leather.

Built from plant waste

Agricultural byproduct pressed into a sheet, usually with a polymer binder holding it together. The bio-based share varies and is rarely published.

Grown rather than made

Mycelium, the root structure of fungi, cultivated into a mat and finished. The newest category and the smallest by volume.

How much of a plant leather is plant

Nearly every plant-based leather is a sandwich. A bio-based layer sits on top, a polymer binder holds it together, and a textile backing carries the strength. The plant share is the part that gets the name, and it is often the smallest part by weight.

Piñatex is pineapple leaf fiber with a resin finish. Cactus leather is nopal powder in a polyurethane matrix. Apple and mango leathers use fruit processing waste the same way. None of this is hidden, and almost none of it is on the front of the pack.

Cork is the exception worth knowing. Cork leather is bark, harvested by hand on a nine-year cycle without felling the tree. The sheet is usually agglomerated granules on a fabric backing with a polyurethane bond, so it carries a binder like the rest. What sets it apart is the harvest, and a cork oak keeps producing for two centuries.

Is vegan leather the same as PU leather?

PU leather is one kind of vegan leather, and the terms get used as if they were the same thing. Vegan leather covers any leather substitute with no animal hide in it, including cactus, pineapple leaf, cork, and mycelium. PU is the specific one made from a polyurethane coating on a fabric backing, and it is the most common by a wide margin.

Is PU leather real leather?

Standard PU leather contains no hide. Two product names break that rule and both are sold openly: bicast leather is a polyurethane film laid over real split hide, and bonded leather binds leather scraps together with polyurethane. Either one is an animal product wearing a synthetic name.

Is TPU leather vegan?

Thermoplastic polyurethane is a synthetic polymer with no animal input, so TPU-coated material is vegan by composition. Brands market it as an upgrade on standard PU because it needs no plasticizers and handles flexing better. The same bicast caveat applies: check that the backing is textile and not split hide.

How much of cactus leather is cactus?

Less than the name suggests. Most plant-based leathers are a bio-based layer bonded with a polymer binder onto a textile backing, so a sheet advertised as cactus leather can be well under half cactus by weight. That does not make it a bad material. It makes the marketing shorthand imprecise, and the brand's technical specification is where the real composition sits.

Is vegan leather better for the environment?

It depends which one and which impact you weigh. Tanning hide is chemically heavy and cattle carry a large land and methane footprint. Polymer leathers come from fossil feedstock and shed microplastics. Cork and mycelium avoid both, and neither is available at the scale PU is. There is no version of this question with a clean answer.

Does vegan leather last as long as hide?

Standard PU generally does not. It delaminates and cracks after a few years of hard use, where good hide keeps going for decades. TPU and the better coated fabrics narrow the gap. If longevity is the concern, buying one well-made synthetic piece and keeping it beats replacing three cheap ones.
