Is PVC Leather / Vinyl Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives
Vegan status: Vegan
Also known as: Vinyl leather, Patent leather (sometimes), PVC faux leather, Pleather (informal)
Origin
Synthetic — polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic layered over a fabric backing. PVC is produced from chlorine and ethylene.
Environmental impact
Rating: high. PVC production involves chlorine chemistry, producing dioxins as byproducts — highly toxic persistent organic pollutants. Plasticisers (often phthalates) are added to make PVC flexible and may leach over time. Not biodegradable. PVC is generally considered the most environmentally harmful common plastic.
Durability
Low to moderate. Cracks and peels over time, particularly in cold temperatures. Less durable than PU leather.
Common uses
Fashion accessories, budget shoes, upholstery, some clothing.
Notes
PVC leather is technically vegan but is considered the least desirable vegan leather option due to its environmental profile. Most sustainable fashion advocates recommend PU leather as a minimum and next-gen materials (Piñatex, Mylo, cork) where possible. The term 'vegan leather' is sometimes applied to PVC incorrectly — PVC and PU are different products with different environmental profiles.
