Is PU Leather Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Vegan status: Vegan

Also known as: Polyurethane leather, Faux leather, Vegan leather, Synthetic leather

Origin

Synthetic — polyurethane polymer applied to a fabric backing (polyester or cotton).

Environmental impact

Rating: medium. Made from petroleum-derived polymers. Does not biodegrade easily. However, production does not involve animal slaughter or tanning chemicals used in real leather. Impact is lower than animal leather when full lifecycle is considered.

Durability

Moderate. Typically lasts 3–5 years with regular use before peeling or cracking. Lower durability than full-grain animal leather.

Common uses

Bags, shoes, belts, upholstery, jackets, watch straps.

Notes

The most common vegan leather alternative. Not all 'vegan leather' is equal — higher-quality PU leather (e.g., microfiber PU) lasts significantly longer than entry-level versions. Distinct from PVC (vinyl) leather, which uses chlorine-based plastics. Look for thickness and backing quality as durability indicators.
