Is Muskin Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives
Vegan status: Vegan
Also known as: Mushroom suede, Phellinus ellipsoideus leather
Origin
Biological — produced from the caps of the Phellinus ellipsoideus mushroom (a large parasitic fungus). The outer skin of the mushroom cap is processed into a leather-like material without chemical treatment.
Environmental impact
Rating: low. No agricultural cultivation required — the mushroom grows on dead trees in the wild. Processing is chemical-free. Fully biodegradable. Carbon-negative production.
Durability
Moderate. Soft, breathable, and naturally thermoregulating. More fragile than conventional leather.
Common uses
Luxury accessories, insoles, watch straps, small leather goods.
Notes
Muskin is distinct from Mylo (which grows mycelium on substrates) — Muskin uses the fruiting body (the mushroom cap itself). Developed by Grado Zero Espace (Italy). Currently produced at very small scale and is expensive. One of the most genuinely natural and sustainable material options, with completely wild sourcing.
