Is Apple Leather Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives
Vegan status: Vegan
Also known as: Apple skin leather, LEAP leather
Origin
Plant-based — made from apple pomace (cores and peels), the solid waste from apple juice and cider production in South Tyrol, Italy.
Environmental impact
Rating: low. Uses 50% apple waste mixed with 50% polyurethane binder. Not fully biodegradable due to the PU component, but significantly reduces agricultural waste. Production concentrated in one of Europe's largest apple-growing regions.
Durability
Moderate — similar to entry-to-mid-grade PU leather.
Common uses
Bags, wallets, watch straps, phone cases, accessories.
Notes
Popularized by the brand FRUMAT (Italy). Used by multiple sustainable fashion brands across Europe. The apple-scent is processed out in production — finished material has no smell. A more sustainable option than virgin PU leather.
