Is Piñatex Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Vegan status: Vegan

Also known as: Pineapple leather, Ananas Anam

Origin

Plant-based — derived from the cellulose fibers found in pineapple leaves, a byproduct of pineapple harvesting in the Philippines.

Environmental impact

Rating: low. Uses agricultural waste (pineapple leaves that would otherwise be burned or discarded). Creates additional income for farming communities. The base material is natural; finishing coatings may add synthetic elements.

Durability

Good. Similar to mid-grade leather in terms of abrasion resistance. Water-resistant.

Common uses

Bags, shoes, accessories, upholstery, hospitality interiors.

Notes

Developed by Dr. Carmen Hijosa and commercialized by Ananas Anam (UK). Used by brands including Hugo Boss, H&M, and Paul Smith in limited collections. The leaf biomass (60% of the waste leaf material after fiber extraction) is returned to farms as fertilizer. One of the most credible next-generation leather alternatives.
