Is Cactus Leather (Desserto) Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives
Vegan status: Vegan
Also known as: Desserto, Nopal cactus leather, Cactus bio-material
Origin
Plant-derived — made from the mature leaves of the nopal cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica), harvested without harming the plant. Developed by Mexican entrepreneurs Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez.
Environmental impact
Rating: low. Nopal cactus requires no irrigation (uses only rainwater in most growing conditions), no fertilisers, and absorbs large quantities of CO₂. Harvesting is done by cutting mature leaves — the plant continues to grow. The Desserto production facility in Zacatecas, Mexico is solar-powered.
Durability
Good. Comparable to mid-grade PU leather. Breathable, partially biodegradable.
Common uses
Luxury fashion accessories, upholstery, shoes, bags, automotive interiors.
Notes
Launched in 2019. Used by Karl Lagerfeld, BMW, Fossil, and H&M in commercial collaborations. One of the most sustainability-credentialed next-gen materials available. The material is partially biodegradable — the cactus fibre component degrades while the backing does not (the current formulation includes a cotton or polyester backing).
