Is Viscose Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives
Vegan status: Vegan
Also known as: Rayon, Viscose rayon, Regular viscose
Origin
Plant-derived but heavily processed — made from wood pulp (often beech, eucalyptus, or bamboo) dissolved in caustic chemicals (sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide) and extruded into fibers.
Environmental impact
Rating: high. Despite being plant-derived, conventional viscose uses highly toxic chemicals (carbon disulfide) that pollute waterways and harm factory workers. A significant percentage of viscose wood pulp is sourced from ancient and endangered forests. Canopy Pac tracks forest-friendly viscose producers.
Durability
Moderate. Soft and breathable but weakens when wet. Often requires dry cleaning.
Common uses
Dresses, linings, blouses, ties, innerwear.
Notes
Vegan in the sense that no animals are harmed, but one of the more environmentally problematic textiles. TENCEL (Lyocell) and Modal are closed-loop alternatives that use the same wood pulp base but significantly reduce chemical waste. When a brand claims sustainability with viscose, always ask about their supply chain.
