Is Bamboo Viscose Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives
Vegan status: Vegan
Also known as: Bamboo rayon, Bamboo fabric, Viscose from bamboo
Origin
Plant-derived but heavily processed — bamboo cellulose is extracted and dissolved using the same caustic chemical process as conventional viscose (rayon). Despite marketing claims, bamboo fabric is not mechanically produced — it undergoes chemical transformation.
Environmental impact
Rating: high. Bamboo the plant is highly sustainable (grows rapidly, requires no pesticides, sequesters carbon). However, the viscose production process is chemically intensive and polluting — identical to conventional viscose/rayon production. The FTC (USA) has taken action against companies making misleading 'eco-friendly bamboo' claims.
Durability
Moderate. Soft and breathable, but weaker than conventional viscose when wet.
Common uses
Soft clothing, underwear, babywear, bed sheets, towels, activewear.
Notes
Bamboo viscose is often marketed with sustainability claims based on the bamboo plant's fast growth, while the processing is identical to conventional viscose. The FTC fined several US retailers for misleading bamboo labelling. True 'bamboo linen' made by mechanical process (like flax) exists but is rare and expensive. Vegan, but not sustainably produced in the standard form.
