Is Conventional Cotton Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Vegan status: Vegan

Also known as: Regular cotton, Standard cotton, Non-organic cotton

Origin

Plant-derived — from the Gossypium plant. Conventional cotton is the most widely grown non-food agricultural crop globally.

Environmental impact

Rating: high. Conventional cotton uses approximately 10,000–20,000 litres of water per kilogram of fibre (Water Footprint Network; WWF). It accounts for around 16% of global insecticide use despite covering only 2.5% of agricultural land. The Aral Sea disaster was largely caused by Soviet-era cotton irrigation. Despite high environmental cost, it involves no animal exploitation.

Durability

Good. Durable, breathable, and washable. Softens over time.

Common uses

Clothing of all types, home textiles, industrial uses.

Notes

Despite being vegan, conventional cotton has severe environmental consequences. The 'choose organic' recommendation is primarily environmental rather than animal welfare. Recycled cotton (made from pre- or post-consumer cotton waste) is a more sustainable vegan option. BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) is a non-organic sustainable cotton standard with some environmental benefits.
