Is TENCEL / Lyocell Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives
Vegan status: Vegan
Also known as: Lyocell, Tencel Lyocell
Origin
Plant-derived — made from sustainably sourced wood pulp (primarily eucalyptus, beech, or spruce) using a closed-loop solvent process that recovers 99%+ of chemicals used.
Environmental impact
Rating: low. TENCEL brand (owned by Lenzing AG, Austria) is the gold standard. Closed-loop production minimizes chemical waste. Eucalyptus grows fast, requires no irrigation or pesticides. Biodegradable at end of life.
Durability
Good. Soft, breathable, moisture-wicking, and durable. Holds shape well.
Common uses
Dresses, shirts, bedding, activewear, denim (when blended).
Notes
TENCEL is a brand name; Lyocell is the generic fiber type. Not all Lyocell is TENCEL-certified — the certification ensures both sustainable sourcing and the clean closed-loop production process. One of the most recommended fabrics in sustainable and vegan fashion.
