Is Soy Fabric / SPF Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives
Vegan status: Vegan
Also known as: Soy protein fibre, SPF, Soy silk, Vegetable cashmere
Origin
Plant-derived — produced from the residual protein in soybean hulls left over from soy oil and tofu production. The protein is extracted, liquefied, and extruded into fibre.
Environmental impact
Rating: medium. Uses agricultural waste from soy processing — positive waste valorisation. However, soy cultivation itself has environmental concerns (deforestation in Brazil, intensive farming practices). The majority of soy is grown for animal feed; soy fabric uses food-processing byproduct.
Durability
Moderate. Soft and silk-like but less durable than conventional silk or synthetic fibres. Biodegradable.
Common uses
Underwear, T-shirts, baby clothes, pillowcases, some luxury knitwear.
Notes
Marketed as 'vegetable cashmere' or 'soy silk' for its softness. Available mainly from Chinese and some European sustainable brands. Its association with soy agriculture (which has significant environmental problems) makes it a complex sustainability story despite being a waste product.
