Is SeaCell Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives
Vegan status: Vegan
Also known as: Seaweed fibre, Lyocell-seaweed blend
Origin
Plant/algae-derived — SeaCell is a Lyocell-based fibre (produced by the Tencel process) that incorporates sustainably harvested seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum) into the fibre structure.
Environmental impact
Rating: low. Seaweed harvesting requires no fresh water, no fertilisers, and no land. The Lyocell production uses a closed-loop solvent process. The seaweed is harvested from wild Icelandic/Norwegian populations.
Durability
Good. Soft, breathable, and drapes well. The seaweed content imparts some anti-bacterial properties.
Common uses
Underwear, sportswear, loungewear, babywear. Marketed for its alleged skin-care properties.
Notes
SeaCell is produced by Smart Fiber AG (Germany). The marketing emphasises health benefits from minerals in the seaweed — the scientific evidence for topical benefits is limited, but the environmental credentials are genuine. A genuinely innovative vegan material with excellent sustainability credentials.
