Origin

Plant-derived — harvested as latex sap from the Hevea brasiliensis rubber tree, primarily grown in Southeast Asia (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia).

Environmental impact

Rating: medium. Natural rubber is biodegradable and renewable. However, large-scale rubber plantations in Southeast Asia have contributed to deforestation of rainforest. Sustainable rubber initiatives (e.g. FSC-certified rubber, Rainforest Alliance) are emerging.

Durability

Excellent elasticity and durability. More flexible and weather-resistant than synthetic rubber in cold conditions.

Common uses

Shoe soles, gloves, elastic bands, some shoe uppers, sports equipment, condoms, medical supplies.

Notes

Natural rubber is vegan — the latex is sap, not an animal product. It should not be confused with latex allergy (which affects some individuals regardless of vegan status). Natural rubber shoe soles are favoured by many vegan brands as a sustainable alternative to synthetic rubber. Synthetic rubber (SBR, neoprene) is petroleum-derived and also vegan.
