Is Jute Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives
Vegan status: Vegan
Also known as: Hessian, Burlap, Corchorus plant fibre
Origin
Plant-derived — from the bast fibres of Corchorus plants, primarily grown in Bangladesh, India, and China.
Environmental impact
Rating: low. Jute requires very little water and no pesticides. It is one of the most affordable natural fibres. Biodegradable and can improve soil health after decomposition. Bangladesh's jute industry supports millions of farming families.
Durability
Moderate. Strong in tension but not particularly durable in abrasion. Degrades with prolonged moisture exposure.
Common uses
Shopping bags, sacks, rope, hessian sacking, carpet backing, packaging. Limited use in clothing.
Notes
The second-most important natural fibre after cotton by production volume. Used extensively as a non-woven backing fabric in carpet manufacturing — often invisible to consumers. Jute shopping bags have become a symbol of environmental awareness despite their low durability compared to canvas or cotton alternatives.
