Is Hemp Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives
Vegan status: Vegan
Also known as: Hemp fabric, Hemp canvas, Industrial hemp
Origin
Plant-derived — from the bast fibers of the Cannabis sativa plant. No intoxicating compounds in industrial hemp fiber.
Environmental impact
Rating: low. Requires no pesticides, minimal water, and improves soil health (phytoremediation). Sequesters carbon. One of the most sustainable textile crops available.
Durability
Excellent. One of the strongest natural fibers. Gets softer with washing. Lasts decades.
Common uses
Canvas bags, shoes, jeans, shirts, rope, paper.
Notes
Legal restrictions historically limited hemp production in the US and EU, but these are being lifted. Hemp-based textiles can be scratchy when coarser — blends with TENCEL or cotton improve softness. Prices are still higher than conventional alternatives but falling as supply increases.
