Is Econyl Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives
Vegan status: Vegan
Also known as: Regenerated nylon, Recycled nylon, Regenerated polyamide
Origin
Synthetic regenerated — Econyl is a brand of recycled nylon produced by Aquafil (Italy) from discarded fishing nets, carpet waste, industrial plastic, and other nylon waste.
Environmental impact
Rating: low. Aquafil claims Econyl reduces the global warming impact of nylon by up to 80% compared to virgin nylon. The raw material recovery from ocean fishing nets is particularly significant. The regeneration process is a chemical cycle — Econyl can theoretically be recycled infinitely.
Durability
Identical to virgin nylon in performance — durable, strong, and elastic.
Common uses
Swimwear, activewear, luxury fashion, carpeting, bags.
Notes
Used by Stella McCartney, Prada, Patagonia, and multiple sustainable swimwear brands. Prada's Re-Nylon line is made from Econyl. The fishing net recovery programme directly addresses ocean plastic pollution. One of the most credible recycled material stories in fashion.
