How Econyl Is Made

Econyl is produced by Aquafil, an Italian synthetic fiber manufacturer, using a closed-loop regeneration process introduced in 2011. The feedstock is nylon 6 waste: recovered fishing nets, fluff from discarded carpets, fabric scraps, and industrial plastic. After collection and sorting, the waste is cleaned and chemically depolymerized — broken back down into caprolactam, the base monomer of nylon 6. This regenerated caprolactam is chemically identical to the version derived from crude oil, so it can be repolymerized into nylon and spun into yarn with no loss of quality.

Because the process returns the material to its monomer state rather than mechanically shredding and remelting it, the resulting polymer does not degrade with each cycle. In principle, Econyl can be regenerated repeatedly, which is why Aquafil describes the system as infinite recycling. The finished yarn is sold to textile mills and carpet manufacturers, which weave or knit it into fabrics and flooring.

Why It Does Not Appear on Fiber Labels

Econyl is a trademark, not a fiber category, so it never appears in the legally required fiber content listing. On garment labels the material shows up simply as nylon in the United States or polyamide in the European Union, with no indication of recycled origin. Fiber labeling laws require generic fiber names and percentages, but they do not require brands to distinguish virgin from regenerated material.

Brands that license Econyl usually advertise it prominently instead: on hang tags, product pages, and marketing copy, often with the ECONYL registered trademark. If a product simply says recycled nylon or regenerated polyamide, it may be Econyl or a competing recycled nylon, since several other producers make regenerated polyamide yarns. Third-party schemes such as the Global Recycled Standard are commonly used to certify recycled content claims in textiles, and some brands cite such certifications alongside the trademark.

How It Compares to Virgin Nylon and Other Recycled Fibers

In performance terms, Econyl is indistinguishable from virgin nylon 6: the same strength, elasticity, dye uptake, and durability. The difference lies entirely in the feedstock. Virgin nylon is synthesized from petrochemicals, while Econyl diverts existing nylon waste, avoiding new crude oil extraction for the polymer itself. Aquafil claims a substantially lower global warming impact per unit of yarn, though the regeneration process still requires significant energy and chemical processing.

Compared with recycled polyester (rPET), the other dominant recycled synthetic, Econyl's chemical recycling has a structural advantage: mechanical rPET recycling shortens polymer chains over successive cycles, while depolymerization restores the monomer each time. Both fibers share the drawbacks of all synthetics — they shed microplastic fibers during washing and do not biodegrade. Natural alternatives such as organic cotton or hemp avoid microplastics but cannot match nylon's stretch and quick-drying behavior, which is why recycled nylon dominates in swimwear.

Where Econyl Shows Up

Swimwear is the most visible category: a large share of brands marketing sustainable swimwear build their collections around Econyl or comparable regenerated nylons, since swim fabric commonly relies on the stretch and softness of polyamide-elastane blends. Activewear — leggings, sports bras, and tights — is the second major apparel use.

Luxury fashion has adopted the material as well. Prada's Re-Nylon line remade the house's signature nylon bags in Econyl, and Stella McCartney and other designer labels have used regenerated nylon in outerwear and accessories. Outside fashion, carpet is a core market: Aquafil's original business is carpet yarn, and Econyl is used in commercial carpet tiles and residential flooring. Backpacks, bags, and outdoor gear round out the list, with several outdoor brands using regenerated nylon in packs and shell fabrics. In all of these products, the fiber itself looks and feels like ordinary nylon.
