Is Cupro / Bemberg Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives
Vegan status: Vegan
Also known as: Bemberg (brand name), Cuprammonium rayon, Cupro silk
Origin
Plant-derived — made from cotton linter (the very short fibres left on cotton seeds after the longer fibres are removed), dissolved in a copper-ammonia solution and regenerated into fibre.
Environmental impact
Rating: medium. Uses cotton linter waste (a byproduct), which is positive. However, the copper-ammonia dissolution process requires careful management of copper waste. Bemberg (the leading brand, produced by Asahi Kasei, Japan) claims a closed-loop process recovering most chemicals and metals used.
Durability
Good. Drapes beautifully, soft, breathable, and hypoallergenic. Biodegradable at end of life.
Common uses
Garment linings, blouses, dresses. Often used as a silk substitute in luxury linings.
Notes
Cupro is marketed as a vegan silk alternative with superior breathability compared to synthetic linings. It is often the lining fabric in luxury fashion garments. Bemberg is the dominant commercial producer. Relatively niche but gaining attention as a vegan alternative to silk linings in tailored garments.
