Despite its luxury positioning, cashmere has an outsized environmental impact relative to other animal fibers. Growing global demand has contributed to serious rangeland degradation in Mongolia. Survey work by the Green-Gold project puts roughly 65% of grassland in a degraded state, and Mongolia's Information and Research Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment reports around 76% of pasture showing signs of desertification. The same survey work finds most of that degraded land could recover within a decade under changed grazing management. Sustainable alternatives include recycled cashmere and Qiviut (musk ox, tiny industry) — neither of which is vegan.
