Are Sucroglycerides (E474) Vegan?

Depends on Source

E474 depends on the fat or oil used to make it. The JECFA definition names no plant, and the 1992 EU review covered sucroglycerides from palm oil, lard and tallow. EFSA found E474 on only 3 product labels between 2012 and 2017.

What are Sucroglycerides?

E474 is a mixture of sucrose esters and mono-, di- and triglycerides, made by reacting sucrose with an edible fat or oil. It acts as an emulsifier.

Also Known As

INS 474; Sucroglyceride

Source

Sucrose reacts directly with a whole edible fat or oil, with or without a solvent, so the glycerides of that fat stay in the product. The JECFA definition says edible fat or oil without naming plant or animal. The EU Scientific Committee on Food evaluated sucroglycerides derived from palm oil, lard and tallow fatty acids in 1992.

Commonly Found In

Fine bakery wares, chewing gum, sugar confectionery and cream analogues, authorized together with E473, though EFSA found E474 on only 3 labels between January 2012 and October 2017.

Vegan Alternative

Sucroglycerides made from vegetable oil, confirmed by the supplier or marked with a vegan certification.

Additional Notes

Ask the supplier which fat or oil reacted with the sucrose. The same question applies to sucrose esters (E473), so one supplier statement can cover both.

Frequently asked questions

Is E474 the same as E473?

No. E473 is a mixture of sucrose esters. E474 also holds mono-, di- and triglycerides from the fat used, and JECFA sets its sucrose ester content at 40 to 60 percent.
