Sorbitol from plant starch is dehydrated to sorbitan, the sorbitan is esterified with oleic acid, and the product is reacted with around twenty units of ethylene oxide to make it water-soluble. The sorbitol and the ethylene oxide are plant-derived and petrochemical, and the oleic acid can come from vegetable oil or from animal fat.

The Fatty Acid Is the Open Question

Polysorbate 80 has three parts, and only one of them is uncertain. The sorbitan core comes from sorbitol, made by hydrogenating glucose from corn or wheat starch. The polyoxyethylene chains come from ethylene oxide, a petrochemical. Neither has an animal route.

The third part is oleic acid, an eighteen-carbon unsaturated fatty acid. Olive oil is around 70 percent oleic, high-oleic sunflower and canola higher still, and palm oil contributes a large share of the world's commercial supply. Beef tallow also contains oleic acid in quantity, and the oleochemical industry splits animal fats as well as vegetable oils into their component acids.

EU specifications for E433 set purity and composition limits without naming a source for the fatty acid. A supplier can meet the specification with either feedstock, so the additive alone cannot be graded vegan or not.

Getting an Answer

Certification is the fastest route. A recognized vegan mark means the certifier has traced ingredients like this one through the supply chain.

Asking works too. Most food-grade polysorbate on the market is made from vegetable oil, largely because plant feedstocks are cheaper and easier to certify for kosher, halal, and vegan markets simultaneously. Manufacturers are used to the question and often answer within a few days.

Pharmaceutical use is harder. Polysorbate 80 stabilizes many injectable medicines and vaccines under the name Tween 80, and the excipient's fatty acid source is rarely disclosed in a patient information leaflet.
