Depends on Source
How we decideVelvet can be vegan. Cotton and polyester velvet are vegan by fiber composition; any silk in the pile or backing makes the fabric non-vegan.
- Origin
- A woven pile fabric: short cut yarns form the raised surface. Velvet can be made from cotton or polyester; a silk-containing version has animal fiber.
- Common Uses
- Clothing and upholstery.
- Durability
- Varies with the fiber, pile height and weave construction. Follow the care instructions for the particular fabric.
Editorial Notes
Check both the raised surface (the pile) and the backing. US labels may give their fiber contents separately or describe the fabric as a whole. A cotton backing does not prove that the pile is cotton. Check decorative trim separately on a finished garment.
Frequently asked questions
Can a velvet fabric have different fibers in its pile and backing?
Yes. A pile fabric can have a separate fiber composition for its raised surface and its backing. If the label lists them separately, check both; either can contain an animal fiber.
