Is Mohair Vegan? Material Facts & Alternatives

Vegan status: Not Vegan

Also known as: Angora goat fibre, Kid mohair

Origin

Animal — harvested from Angora goats (not to be confused with angora rabbit fibre). South Africa produces approximately 60% of global mohair.

Environmental impact

Rating: medium. Angora goats require significant land and water. The South African mohair industry has faced scrutiny over animal welfare conditions. The goats are shorn rather than plucked, unlike angora rabbits.

Durability

Very good. Lustrous, strong, and resilient. Does not felt as easily as wool. Kid (young goat) mohair is the softest.

Common uses

Luxury knitwear, scarves, suits, blended yarns, plush toys.

Notes

PETA investigations into South African mohair farms in 2019 revealed rough handling of goats, leading major retailers to suspend mohair purchasing. The Sustainable Fibre Alliance has developed a Responsible Mohair Standard, but this does not make mohair vegan. Major retailers including H&M, Topshop, and Zara have pledged to phase out mohair.
