Source
A mineral pigment refined from titanium ore. Ilmenite or rutile is processed by either the sulfate route, which digests the ore in sulfuric acid, or the chloride route, which converts it to titanium tetrachloride and burns that back to the oxide. The result is a bright white powder of high opacity.
Commonly Found In
No longer permitted in EU food. Still found in UK and US confectionery coatings, chewing gum, icing, and white sauces, plus tablet and capsule coatings, toothpaste, sunscreen, and cosmetics worldwide.
Vegan Alternative
No substitute needed on vegan grounds. Where a white is required, calcium carbonate (E170), rice starch, and calcium phosphate are the common replacements.
