Mineral salts of carbonic acid. Most sodium carbonate is made by the Solvay process, which combines brine, limestone, and ammonia; the rest is mined as trona ore, chiefly in Wyoming and Turkey. Sodium bicarbonate, the baking soda in every kitchen, is made by saturating a sodium carbonate solution with carbon dioxide.

Baking powder and self-raising flour, cakes, cookies, soda bread, pretzels, ramen and other alkaline noodles, cocoa processing, effervescent tablets, some mineral waters. Also in toothpaste and cleaning products.
