Source
Mineral pigments. Food and cosmetic grades are made synthetically, by precipitating iron salts from solution or by controlled oxidation of iron, then calcining the product to fix the shade. Synthesis is preferred over grinding natural ochre because it gives tighter control of heavy metal content.
Commonly Found In
Cake decorations, sugar coatings on sweets, salmon-substitute and vegan seafood products, tablet and capsule coatings, some cheese rinds. Very widely used in cosmetics, especially foundation, eyeshadow, and mascara.
Vegan Alternative
No substitute needed. E172 is vegan.
