Mineral pigments. Food and cosmetic grades are made synthetically, by precipitating iron salts from solution or by controlled oxidation of iron, then calcining the product to fix the shade. Synthesis is preferred over grinding natural ochre because it gives tighter control of heavy metal content.

Three Pigments, One Number

E172 covers black iron oxide, which is magnetite, red iron oxide, which is hematite, and yellow iron oxyhydroxide, sometimes called iron hydroxide. Humans have used the natural forms as pigments since the Paleolithic; the red and yellow ochres in cave paintings are the same chemistry. Modern production is synthetic. The Penniman process oxidizes scrap iron in the presence of a seed pigment, the Laux process uses the reduction of nitroaromatics, and precipitation routes drop iron salts out of solution with alkali.

Calcination then locks in particle size and shade. Synthesis wins over mining for a specific reason: natural ochre carries whatever else was in the deposit, including lead and arsenic. Food and cosmetic specifications set tight limits on those contaminants, and a controlled reaction meets them reliably. The pigment that results is iron and oxygen, both mineral, and carries no animal component.

Where the Color Turns Up

Food use in the EU is limited. E172 colors sugar coatings on confectionery, decorations for cakes and pastries, and the rind treatment on some cheeses. It also appears in pharmaceutical tablet coatings and gelatin or HPMC capsule shells, where it supplies the beige, brown, and pink shells that identify a medicine. Plant-based seafood analogues have become a growing use.

Red and yellow iron oxides give vegan salmon and tuna substitutes their marbled orange without resorting to carmine or synthetic azo dyes. Cosmetics account for far more volume than food. Foundation shade ranges are built almost entirely from blends of the three iron oxides plus titanium dioxide, which is why a vegan cosmetics label that lists CI 77491 and CI 77492 is showing mineral pigments and nothing more.

Reading Iron Oxides on a Cosmetics Label

Cosmetic ingredient lists use the international color index system, so iron oxides appear as CI 77491 for red, CI 77492 for yellow, and CI 77499 for black. Titanium dioxide sits beside them as CI 77891 and mica as CI 77019. All of those are mineral. The ingredients that make a cosmetic non-vegan sit elsewhere on the list: carmine, listed as CI 75470, plus beeswax, lanolin, silk protein, and animal-derived squalene.

One nuance applies to color cosmetics generally. Vegan composition and cruelty-free testing policy are separate questions, and a foundation built entirely from mineral pigments can still come from a brand that sells into markets requiring animal testing. Certification marks cover that second question; the ingredient list only covers the first.
