Is Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (E464) Vegan?

Also known as: HPMC, Hypromellose, Cellulose hydroxypropyl methyl ether, Methylhydroxypropylcellulose

Vegan

Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose is vegan. Producers make it from wood pulp or cotton fiber modified with caustic soda, methyl chloride, and propylene oxide. Under the name hypromellose it is the shell of most vegan capsules.

HPMC; Hypromellose; Cellulose hydroxypropyl methyl ether; Methylhydroxypropylcellulose

Source

A modified plant fiber. Purified cellulose from wood pulp or cotton linters is swollen in sodium hydroxide, then reacted with methyl chloride and propylene oxide, which attach methyl and hydroxypropyl groups to the cellulose chain. Washing and milling give a white powder that dissolves in cold water.

Commonly Found In

Vegan and vegetarian capsule shells, tablet coatings, gluten-free bread and cake, plant-based meat, batters, sauces, ice cream, eye drops, and construction mortars in a different grade.

Vegan Alternative

No substitute needed. E464 is vegan, and HPMC capsules are themselves the standard vegan replacement for gelatin capsules.

Additional Notes

HPMC is the material that made vegan capsules possible. Under the pharmacopoeial name hypromellose it forms the shell of most plant-based capsules, replacing gelatin, which comes from animal collagen. Supplement labels write it as "vegetable capsule (hypromellose)," and that phrase is a reliable signal that the shell is plant-derived.

In depth

The Vegan Capsule

For most of the twentieth century a capsule meant gelatin, boiled out of animal hide and bone. Vegans and vegetarians had to open capsules and tip the powder into water, or find the same supplement in tablet form. HPMC changed that. Dipping pins into a warm hypromellose solution and drying them produces a shell with the strength and dissolution behavior a capsule needs, from a plant fiber.

Two-piece HPMC capsules now dominate the plant-based supplement market, and pullulan, a fermentation polysaccharide, covers a smaller share. Labels signal it clearly. "Vegetable capsule," "veg caps," "HPMC capsule," and "hypromellose" all mean the same thing, and any of them answers the question. Where a supplement label says only "capsule shell (gelatin)" or lists gelatin among ingredients, the shell is animal-derived.

From Wood Fiber to Food Additive

Manufacture starts from bleached wood pulp or cotton linters. Sodium hydroxide swells the fiber and exposes its hydroxyl groups. Methyl chloride and propylene oxide are then added under pressure, grafting two different substituent groups onto the cellulose chain. That double substitution is what distinguishes E464 from methyl cellulose (E461).

The hydroxypropyl groups raise the gelation temperature and change solubility, giving formulators a family of grades with different set points and viscosities. Both raw materials are plant and both reagents are industrial chemicals with no animal origin. The full cellulose ether range, E460 through E466, shares that supply chain, so every member of it is vegan. The body absorbs none of it. It passes through as soluble fiber.

Food and Pharmaceutical Uses

Gluten-free bakery relies on HPMC for structure, trapping gas in a dough that has no gluten network. Plant-based meat uses it alongside methyl cellulose for binding, and batters use it to cut oil uptake during frying. Pharmaceutical use goes beyond capsules. Hypromellose coats tablets, controls release rate in extended-release formulations, and forms the film in artificial tears, where it keeps moisture on the eye surface.

One label caution belongs here. A vegetable capsule tells you about the shell and not about the contents. Vitamin D3 from lanolin, omega-3 from fish oil, glucosamine from shellfish, and gelatin-coated ingredients all appear inside HPMC capsules, so the fill needs its own check.

Frequently asked questions

Is E464 vegan?

Yes. Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose is made from plant cellulose, from wood pulp or cotton linters, modified with sodium hydroxide, methyl chloride, and propylene oxide. No animal-derived material is used.

Are hypromellose capsules vegan?

Yes. Hypromellose is the pharmacopoeial name for HPMC, and capsules made from it are the standard plant-based replacement for gelatin shells. Labels describe them as vegetable capsules, veg caps, or HPMC capsules.

Does a vegetable capsule mean the supplement is vegan?

Only the shell. The contents need a separate check, since vitamin D3 is often from lanolin, omega-3 from fish oil, and glucosamine from shellfish, and all of those are sold in HPMC capsules.

What is the difference between E461 and E464?

Both are modified cellulose. E461 carries methyl groups only, while E464 carries methyl and hydroxypropyl groups, which changes its gelling temperature and solubility. E464 is the one used for capsule shells and tablet coatings.
