Coal Tar Chemistry, No Animal Input

Brilliant blue belongs to the triarylmethane family. The molecule is built around a central carbon carrying three aromatic rings. Production starts from benzaldehyde and aniline derivatives sourced from petroleum refining, historically from coal tar. The older literature therefore calls these coal tar dyes.

The synthesis condenses the aldehyde with two amine components, then oxidizes the colorless leuco intermediate into the intense blue product. Sulfonate groups make it water-soluble. The finished dye is isolated as a disodium salt and dried to a powder. Aluminum lake versions are precipitated onto alumina for use in fats and coatings.

No animal-derived reagent, carrier, or processing aid appears in any of that. Where a label lists E133 or FD&C Blue No. 1, the color itself is vegan, and the rest of the ingredient list decides the product.

Not One of the Southampton Six

Six food colors must carry the phrase "may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children" on EU and UK labels: E102, E104, E110, E122, E124, and E129. Brilliant blue is absent from that list. The 2007 Southampton study did not test it.

Chemistry is part of the reason. The six named colors are azo dyes or a quinophthalone dye, while brilliant blue is a triarylmethane. Very little brilliant blue crosses the gut wall, and most of an ingested dose leaves in the feces unchanged.

That difference explains why a blue sweet and a red one from the same bag can carry different label warnings. Neither warning has anything to do with animal content.

Where Blue Comes From When It Is Not Synthetic

Blue is the hardest color to source from plants. Anthocyanins (E163) shift blue only in narrow pH windows and are unstable, and no traditional blue plant pigment survives food processing well.

Spirulina extract, a phycocyanin from blue-green algae, is the main natural alternative and now colors many mainstream sweets, but it degrades with heat, light, and acidity, which limits where it works. The EU treats it as a coloring food, so it carries no E-number, and in the United States the FDA approved it for food coloring in 2013.

Both options are vegan. The choice between them turns on stability and cost. A blue food gives no clue about animal content from its color alone.
