Where food-grade CO₂ comes from
Carbon dioxide used in food and beverage production is almost never manufactured for that purpose alone. How CO₂ is used in food production

None of these applications involve animal inputs; the gas either dissipates, evaporates, or remains as harmless dissolved carbonation in the finished product.

Whether CO₂ appears on a label depends on how it is used. When added directly to a product — as in carbonated beverages — EU rules identify it as the additive E290, though beverage labels more often simply state "carbonated water" or "sparkling." In the United States, carbon dioxide is recognized as safe for food use by the FDA, and carbonated drinks list "carbonated water" as an ingredient rather than the gas itself.
When CO₂ is used as a processing aid — a packaging atmosphere, a chilling medium, or an extraction solvent — it generally does not appear in the ingredient list at all. Packs using modified atmosphere packaging in the EU carry the phrase "packaged in a protective atmosphere," without naming the gases involved.

The slaughterhouse context
